-
- An OH asked why PAY for SkyMoon when other EME prediction programs are free.
-
- I'm certainly no expert on all the free programs (or SkyMoon for that matter),
- but some of the features I saw in Skymoon are:
-
- Window-type display of the Moon on a chart giving the sky's noise temperature.
- Thus you can see what background QRN you will be fighting. I'm essentially
- certain that sky-temperature charts for all common EME bands are included.
-
- Ability to go forward and backward in time at desired rates, or to jump to
- any date/time. I suppose all EME programs have this.
-
- I vaguely think that there is a S/N predictor, given powers, beam gains and
- beamwidths, receiver bandwidth and noise tempertaure, etc, and the background
- sky temperature.
-
- Being a window-looking program, it is more "exciting" to watch than a program
- which just listed numerical results (which it certainly gives).
-
- Sorry for the convoluted English.

- Subject: Data transmission over radio
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- First of all, this is not directly related to amateur radio.
- For this I apologize. But I figured that this group was most
- likely to have the expertize I'm looking for.
-
- I'm working on a project that requires the transmission of
- geo location data from a mobile source to a base station. The data
- rate would be slow, so nothing really fancy is required. I
- understand that there are companies that provide this type of
- service by satellite, but I'm looking for a simpler, cheaper
- solution.
-
- I had in mind some sort of modem connection to a business band
- radio. Does anyone know of an off-the-shelf product that provides
- an rs-232 connection to a laptop computer and connection to an
- available business radio? Are there radio-modems available that
- would provide the functionality in one unit?
-
- In any case the solution will have to function in dense urban
- environment with many tall buildings.
-
- I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.
-
- Thanks

- Have noticed much additional hiss on received audio while transmiting with a
- speaker mike or any external source. Even just shorting ptt/audio to ground
- gives a noisey signal at the other receiver. My ft-470 is fine with this same
- test. Anyone else have a simular problem? Endemic of the 23 or something I

- MP>> Do you, or anyone reading this, where I can get a DC connector for the

-
- You'll find that a Sony plug fits well enough into the DC jack. You can
- pick them up at Radio Shack for $3. They are part number 270-1575.
- They are made to fit into a cable that RS sells, with which you can
- change the polarity; but you can solder onto the ends without having to
- buy that cable. The only problem: with enough of an up and down
- jiggle of the plug, you can cut the supply of current enough to turn the
- rig on and off. The outer diameter must be a little too small - those
- sneaky Yaesuits! But overall it is less expensive than ordering from
- Yaseu. Just watch those bumps in the road!

-
- Ah, but that requires the net control to make a followup
- transmission after mine - a potentially unnecessary waste
- of bandwidth if I had initially avoided doubling with the other
- station by using the "here is <drop carrier>" technique.
-
- This thread seems to be going in circles. John and others have
- described a net call up technique where stations check in with only
- their call and an indicator of "traffic/no traffic." That's fine.
- In this case the "here is" is probably unnecessary and wasteful.
-
- However,
- there are other useful call up techniques !! Some have been described

- We will be taking a trip to Monterey sometime so I'm looking for
- info on open 2m repeaters in that area. We will also be in Solvang
- so info for that area would also be appreciated.
-
-
- I can't help with Monterey, but assuming you are driving to Solvang, a good
- 2m repeater in the San Luis Obispo area is Questa Peak on
- 146.800 - pl 107.2, you can also try Cal Poly on 146.760 - pl 107.2.
-
- Solvang has a repeater on 146.895 - no pl. Note that Solvang is in a
- canyon, don't expect a lot of coverage from there.
-
- South of Solvang try Santa Barbara on 146.790 - pl 131.8. Solvang is on a
- point on the California coast that provides an effective line-of-sight
- barrier to FM-VHF, so you are not likely to hit Questa from South of
- Solvang, nor Santa Barbara from North of Solvang.

- Does anyone have the number for Kenwood USA? I checked the 1-800 in
- the library but they didn't have an entry and I couldn't find it in
- any of the CA telephone directories (it would help if I knew where
- they are).
-
- Please respond via email.

- One I've heard is: Ham #1 is clear as a bell into the repeater. Ham #2 is popping
- in and out a lot and says, "I can't hear you very well. Maybe it's your antenna
- or something." {something is right!}
-
- Another: Ham #1 and #2 are having a conversation on the repeater. Ham #3 comes on
- calling #4. This happens several times. Finally #1 and #2 finish their
- conversation. Eventually #3 and #4 get into a conversation. 3 says, "I've been
- calling you but you didn't answer. There must be something wrong with the
- repeater. I couldn't even hear it." 4 says, "I heard you. You were transmitting
- on top of someone elses' conversation. Maybe your volume was turned down." 3 says,
- "Yeah I guess they fixed the repeater. So you can hear me now." 4 says, "Yes
- I've been hearing you all along. For some reason you could not hear the repeater."
- 3 says, "Well good, the repeater's fixed now."

- My favorite was the two repeater users in Stockton on a local repeater. Ham 1
- said "I wonder if we can talk to each other simplex?" Ham 2 " I don't know
- let's try" Ham 1 " How do we do it?" Ham 2 "Just hit the the reverse
- button." I eventually felt pity for them and helped explain how it worked for
- them and they were able to rech each other simplex but you really have to
- wonder how some people's minds work.
